Superyacht owner Guido Krass is the man behind a line of superyachts that have gone on to become an icon of design. Featured in the latest issue – and the cover – of The Superyacht Owner magazine, he describes how he set up Hanseatic Marine in Australia to build the longest all-aluminium yachts in the world, starting with 73m Silver. The newly conceived exterior living areas aboard the third in the line, 77m Smeralda, such as the bigger beach club, reflect the demands of today’s owners, says Krass who invited Justin Ratcliffe to join him aboard the yacht for an in depth feature in the magazine.

The May issue of The Superyacht Owner magazine, the exclusive title which gives owners advice on topics related to ownership, also features some exciting designers. Jonny Horsfield, Espen Øino, Dickie Bannenberg and others contributed to a new owner guide approach to design, singling out common mistakes as a first time owner.

“Often owners and clients do not spend enough time analysing their needs early on in the design process,” suggests Øino. “This can cause them to redefine the brief halfway into the build process, thus creating unnecessary delays and additional costs.”

Design editor, Andrew Johansson also catches up with VSY to discover the thinking behind designs of 72m motoryacht Stella Maris’s twin tenders. Designed by Paolo Virgolini and built by High Tech Marine, the two 7.3m tenders took eight months to complete from initial sketches to delivery, and have a strong ‘family feel’.

There are features on the industry’s best loved brands, including Benetti, which celebrates an incredible 140 years in the business this year. Owners invite The Superyacht Owner to join them mid way on their incredible journey, from Thailand to a circumnavigation, with Gerhard Ruether of Zefiro speaking in Auckland on the eve of the New Zealand Millenium Cup before her round the world trip resumes.

There is much more, including the importance of maintaining a yacht to class as well as building and a prediction from brokers on the future of the resale market. More owners are interviewed and destinations are unearthed from corners of the earth that are only accessible via yacht.
