Almost a year into joining Pinpoint Works, Stuart Boyd reflects on how his varied professional experience led him to be working with one of the most exciting software companies in the industry.
With 12 years of experience as crew with a Chief Mate 3000GT license, Stuart Boyd, known as Stu, made the jump to land in 2016 to start a family. Building on his professional yacht crew experience, his first land-based position was with the well-known Pinmar Refinishing (Global Yachting Group) in the MB92 shipyard in Barcelona as Production Manager.
Having seen first-hand onboard how technology could improve communication and efficiency among the crew, over the next two and a half years at Pinmar he found it equally as clear how processes needed to be improved upon from a shipyard or subcontractor point of view by streamlining business practices. He knew using the right technology could achieve this.
"For my job, the requirement of daily updates, photos and reporting across several projects became immense. You just don't have enough hours in the day to spend time reporting back your Superyacht clients or Project Managers. It is the right thing to do, but it just wasn't possible," said Stu.
It was during his time with Pinmar that Stu was introduced to Pinpoint Works. "I was able to document the daily progress onboard each yacht, add comments, photos and spec sheets where needed. Then at the end of the day, I could just export one of the worklists from Pinpoint Works and all my reporting needs were done,” explains Stu, “This literally saved me one or two hours a day, every day of the week. It very quickly completely changed the way I worked."
As Stu contemplated his next professional moves, his mind kept returning to Pinpoint Works: "When I was using the software I kept thinking back how useful this type of tool would have been when I was a Chief Officer as well. Seeing how it works, it can take you from being a good manager to a great manager, with next to no effort. If you want to separate yourself professionally from all other crew, this is how you can do it. It's a tool that every Head of Department should have."
Almost a year into working with Pinpoint Works as Business Development Manager, Stu hears the same thing over and over from HOD’s, ‘this is exactly what the industry has been needing for years.’ And it is this sentiment that keeps him enthusiastic about the job and the product as it continues to evolve.
James Stockdale and Leslie Gillotte, co-founders of Pinpoint Works, were thrilled when Stu approached them about collaborating. “He’d been a strong supporter and advocate for our software from day one and very communicative with us directly about it,” said James, “we knew his enthusiasm for the product was genuine and, as we were in a position to build on our core team, we felt like Stu would be a great fit given his varied yachting background.”
Stu supported James and Leslie at the Monaco Yacht Show and METSTRADE in Amsterdam last autumn and is steadily growing their client base, including +70 super yachts of over 1,000GT, shipyards, yacht management companies, and industry consultants throughout Europe.
“I know first-hand that to manage the volume of work required to keep yachts operational for their owners each year takes planning, preparation and execution. Pinpoint Works is the perfect tool for Superyachts, shipyards and contractors to do this,” Stu continues, “and the beauty is in the simplicity – it’s quick to get started, not too many bells and whistles to confuse teams, and is instantly more efficient than using spreadsheets, Whatsapp, Dropbox, etc."
While Stu looks back on his time at Pinmar and as yacht crew fondly, he knows it’s these experiences that have led him to recognize the true need for efficiency through better communication tools, like Pinpoint Works. Almost a year into joining the company, Stu and the rest of the team continue to be inspired by their client’s feedback and enthusiasm for the product and look forward to helping more yachting professionals as they strive to implement new technology to make their lives easier.
