Hug Engineering IMO Tier III-certified

Hug Engineering has announced that its selective catalytic emission reduction system, created in partnership with MTU and Amels, has been certified as IMO Tier III-compliant by Lloyd’s Register…

Further to Amels’ announcement that it had become the first Dutch shipyard to successfully reach IMO Tier III compliance, Hug Engineering has substantiated this claim by announcing that its selective catalytic emission reduction system, created in partnership with MTU, has been certified as IMO Tier III-compliant by Lloyd’s Register.

“This is another milestone for us with regards to getting the IMO Tier III certification of our nauticlean,” comments Elizabeth Rahman of Dutch Hug partner SootTech. “We appreciate the trust in our products and services by our partner, the Dutch leading superyacht builder Amels.”

Hug Engineering’s selective catalytic emission reduction system has been custom designed to work with the MTU 4000 Main Engines found on the 57m Amels 188 series. The generator sets for this system had been certified as Tier III-compliant in December 2015.

Engine test

As it stands, the stringent 80 per cent reduction of NOx emissions, as required by IMO Tier III, only exits in relation to superyacht projects above 500gt that have had their keels laid beyond January 1 2016 and that wish to cruise in the North American and the United States Caribbean Sea NOx Emission Control Areas.

However, by 2021 compliance will extend to all vessels below 500gt and longer than 24m, and it is expected that the list of the NOx emission control areas will be added to in the not-so-distant future. Hug Engineering has clarified that the necessity of additional selective catalytic reduction systems is inevitable and that it is performing numerous other tests to ensure certified NOx reduction systems are available across the superyacht fleet, as and when they are needed.
