Italian refit association 'Marea' launches
Nine companies have joined Marea, a new refit association based in Viareggio in Italy. Marea wants to keep Italian craftsmanship alive as well as capitalise on the burgeoning refit sector.…
The Marea Marine refit association will offer yachts a comprehensive range of services from its nine partner organisations including resolution of design or construction problems, emergency repair work, maintenance work and extensive refits such as structural modifications and new interior design. The association will be managed by design and consultation company, Studio Scanu.

Once fully operational, Marea will be able to offer berthing and hauling for yachts of up to 130m from its bases in Livorno and Viareggio. Currently the company is still confirming agreements and ensuring facilities are ready for work. However, the wheels are already in motion for two major refit projects as Carol Vasseur Scanu, founding member of Marea and owner of Studio Scanu explained:
"We’re in negotiations for a couple of refits at the moment – the stern damage of a 62 metre and a change to the interior décor of a new purchase of a 50 metre."
Scanu, who spearheaded the project, was seeing a healthy demand for refits and decided to capitlise on this with the founding of Marea. She said:
"Instead of coming across yachts wanting refits by chance, we’ve decided to be proactive and seek the work out. Studio Scanu has already completed the successful conversion of 38.5m Moldavia to Mystic W, which is how we found many of our partner companies as they worked with us on this project."
Many of the companies associated with Marea are seizing the opportunity to join Marea because of their history with Studio Scanu and the chance to sustain their businesses.
Roberto Milazzo, project manager at furniture makers and outfitters, L’Onda Arredamenti said:
"We had already worked with Studio Scanu, so when Carol Scanu called us we had that history and knew the company did great work. Then we learned that the experience of the other firms were very high so we were encouraged to get involved. Crucially for us, new build work has slowed down steadily since the economic crisis of 2008 and this is an opportunity to expand into the refit sector. Refit used to be a side project for us, but Marea is a chance to make it a focus."
Stefano Ghelardoni from electrical installation company, Navel Italy agreed, saying:
"We believe that Marea is beginning in the right moment; when the request for assistance and refit of used yachts is growing."

Not simply a business, Marea is also flying the flag of Italian craftsmanship. Scanu emphasised the organisation's greater designs:
"The craftsmanship and heritage in Viareggio is amazing and we don’t want to let that die out. The idea is to bring specialists together to sustain the tradition of yacht craftsmanship in Viareggio."
Indeed, many of the companies associated in Marea are family businesses that have been operating for decades. Nando Russo at shipyard Cantiere Navale Mediterranea remembers growing up in it. He said:
"As soon as I was big enough to hold it, they gave me a little hammer so I could help out. So, although I am young, I have already been doing this for almost thirty years. Today times are difficult with the new builds falling off and yards weighing more and more of the financial costs on their subcontractors through delayed payment. We all want to work, to take care of our families and to protect the heritage of our companies and trade. Marea gives us this opportunity."
The nine companies associated in Marea are:
▪ Studio Scanu – direction and organisation
▪ Cantiere Navale Mediterranea – shipyard, metal carpentry and logistics
▪ L’Onda Arredamenti – furniture makers and outfitters
▪ Navel – Electrical installations, switchboards and automation
▪ Arnaval – Propulsion and hydraulic installations
▪ Global Impianti – Piping installations
▪ Savermar – Painting, varnishing and scaffolding
▪ Giusti Cold Systems – Air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation installations
▪ Thermoisolriv – Thermal and acoustic insulation
Each company was sourced by Studio Scanu and had to provide records of successful work and sound finances before they could be admitted into Marea.
Marea is directing all enquiries to Carol Scanu until the website launches later in the month.
