Arup loves a challenge
Ahead of the company's appearance at SuperyachtDESIGN Week, Rebecca Taylor visited the London offices of Arup to meet with the team and learn more about its forward thinking projects and innovations.…
An impressive list of projects the world over, the team has worked on some iconic buildings in London including the Gherkin, Shard, Millennium Bridge and the DLR extension. Hargrave personally specialises in exploring and envisioning the future of the built environment, focusing on the coordination and delivery of the team's global and regional foresight activities. With a keen interest in trend spotting, he enjoys looking at how society and technology will transform future human experiences.

You won't find run of the mill designs and blue prints around this office. "We don't go for the standard structural designs; we enjoy looking at something new, from a different angle, in a way people didn't think was possible", Hargrave shares. Recent projects include trends in green infrastructure, a project on the future of urban water and a number of global structures including Heathrow Terminal 5, Aldar Headquarters in Abu Dhabi, the Birds Nest stadium and Singapore Flyer.
With dedicated teams constantly focusing on R & D and discovering new and intelligent ways to create sustainable structures, Arup has long been at the forefront for new and innovative thinking. A focus on the environment, ability to think outside the box and bringing something new to each project, the team attracts like-minded individuals as a result. "We all have a vested interest in seeing the group perform well and being forerunners in the field of structural engineering and design", he concludes.
Hargrave will be joined by Martin Pauli, architect and materials consultant based in the Berlin office, at this year's SuperyachtDESIGN Week (23-25 June) on 24 June from 15:00-16:30. Please click here to register and for further information on the event.
