Edmiston acquires British furniture makers Linley

Jamie Edmiston spoke to SuperyachtNews.com about his recent acquisition of bespoke British furniture company Linley. The move could have implications for Edmiston & Company at a later stage, although current plans are for rebranding Linley.…

Jamie Edmiston, commercial and marketing director at Edmiston & Company, spoke to SuperyachtNews.com about an intriguing new personal project first announced at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show.

Mr Edmiston chose the show to unveil plans, already moving apace, for a ‘soft rebrand’ of established British furniture makers, Linley. It follows his personal acquisition of the company, which was announced in June 2011.

The investment was finalised at around the same time as Mark Cornell was appointed new CEO of Edmiston & Company. Cornell had stated that he would be “embarking on a more entrepreneurial role and expanding the company’s footprint internationally.” However, Mr Edmiston confirmed that the move has “nothing to do with Edmiston & Company.” He said:

“The Linley investment is by me personally – it has nothing to do with Edmiston & Company. Building the Edmiston brand was a key part of my life over the last ten years; in late 2010 I started looking at other opportunities for investment where I could add value on the brand marketing value.”

The choice of Linley, which was set up by the Queen’s nephew David Linley in 1985, is arguably a very smart move both in terms of investment and possible future involvement with Edmiston & Company at a later stage. The brand is respected, has a strong heritage and a unique commitment to bespoke design; all the right ingredients to propel it to success across the globe. Plans have already been mooted, according to an interview in The Sunday Times, to “expand into Asia and the Middle East.”  Edmiston confirmed this, saying his aim is to “build the business both locally and internationally; building on the heritage and values of the company.”

Meanwhile associations with Linley can only strengthen the Edmiston & Company brand, even if links are in name only at this stage. Highly customised luxury design, craftsmanship and care for the client’s needs and tastes are inherent to both Linley furniture and Edmiston & Company, which offers specialist project management for yacht construction, design and refit as well as charter and sale of superyachts.

When asked about collaborative plans for Edmiston & Company and Linley, Mr Edmiston said:

“Linley has already worked with several leading yacht designers and we certainly intend to develop our work with the yachting sector – particularly designers - producing fantastic bespoke pieces for superyachts.”

We can only wait and see with interest what will happen with the two companies in the future. But for now, the focus is on the Linley flagship store in London’s Belgravia, with a complete re-launch planned for 18 October 2011.
