Mataró is latest Barcelona marina to open
Mr Xiqui Mas Borrell, founder of Mataró, says its small, bespoke approach will set the marina apart from the competition. Situated near refit centre, Varador 2000, current clients are expected to take up most of the berths.…
The marina offers 22 superyacht berths, catering for yachts up to 50m and is just five nautical miles from Varador 2000.
Varador 2000 provides repair and maintenance solutions for superyachts. It is expected to supply much of the business for Mataró
Its launch date has been chosen to coincide with requests for overwintering berths and many clients at Varador have already taken up the offer. Mas Borrell said Mataró has secured 40 per cent of its berths since officially launching on 1 October 2011. Mas Borrell added that the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix provided a further incentive to opening the marina now. With the event held annually at Monmelo, Mataró will be geographically the closest marina to the racing circuit and Mas Borrell expects an increase in business from yachts wanting to be near the action.
Mr Xiqui Mas Borrell
The arrival of Mataró comes in the midst of what is approaching a marina frenzy in Barcelona. Marina Port Vell opens in 2012 offering 30 large berths for superyachts and Vilanova Grand Marina-Barcelona, also just outside Spain's cultural capital, offers 49 berths for superyachts. Mas Borrell is one of the founders of Vilanova, but has since distanced himself from the project, although he remains a partner.
Asked what Mataró can offer to compete with its peers, he said:
“Mataró is smaller with only 22 moorings. For this reason, we are focused and committed to our clients. All our energies and skills are for them.”
He added, “Our idea is to create a “Marina du charme” - few moorings offering top-level service and quality. Besides that, our customers can count on all the technical-end professional support of our team, something not that easy to find.”
Mas Borrell is also confident the long standing clients of Varador 2000, which has been in business for 27 years, will provide continued uptake for the berths at nearby Mataró. He said:
“Our project is based on the fidelity and confidence we have with our clients during the years. So let's say that the marina is an additional service that we are able to offer them.”
