African luxury brand Patrick Mavros has announced that it will open a new store in Mauritius called The Patrick Mavros Mauritius Atelier. The concept store will be more than a showcase for Patrick Mavros creations it will be a place to get behind the creative process at the design studio and workshop.

The brand is known for its distinctive aesthetic, which embodies the mystery Africa and now the Indian Ocean too. It specialises in silver and metal work, but also some pieces of furniture.Conceived and created by Forbes Mavros, Patrick’s second son, the Patrick Mavros Mauritius Atelier represents the fourth international outlet, and the first on the island.

The Atelier is an impressive space consisting of a classic colonial African style boutique on the ground floor. Upstairs is the workshop and design studio. The store has been carefully furnished with an eclectic selection of furniture sourced from around the world — antiques from India and Parisian markets, Swahili tiles, Zimbabwean Batonka doors and stools. Forbes has designed custom silver monkey door handles (pictured) for the store and iron gates incorporating native animals of Mauritius.

The store also features a seven-metre staircase that connects the boutique to the workshop above. Hanging in this void is a specially commissioned chandelier, depicting monkeys running up a banana tree stem. In a nod to the importance of family to the brand, Forbes’ aunt, celebrated founder of Ardmore Ceramic Studio has made the piece.

Forbes Mavros who lives in Mauritius is an avid surfer and outdoorsman. Forbes is a jewellery designer by birth, having grown up in Africa, where he spent his child hood in the Zimbabwe workshop, making jeweller for his mother. Forbes studied Jewellery design at the Edinburgh College of Art and latter in Milan at the Richemont Creative Academy.

In addition to what the company refers to as ‘everyday silver’ items, the atelier can also undertake bespoke commissions for clients.
