Philippines Superyacht Association founded

The superyacht industry’s advance into Asia continues with the announcement of the founding of the Philippine Superyacht Association.

The Association has been formed in response to the growing amount of superyacht traffic currently navigating the region.

According to a spokesperson:

“Historically, the majority of the world’s privately owned superyachts have gravitated towards the Mediterranean Sea and the Islands of the Caribbean. A recent trend, however, has been for yachts to venture further afield.

“Superyacht owners are now discovering many beautiful parts of the world, previously unexplored by maritime tourism.

“Strong economic growth in Asia has also produced many wealthy individuals craving ownership of such luxury items as sailing and motor yachts.”

The founding of the Philippines’ first national superyacht body follows similar moves from Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia and it is hoped that collaboration between the various Associations will serve to further boost the lot of Asia as a superyacht destination.

In the latest issue of The Crew Report (March 2011), there is a destination focus on this region, with an article from the captains of Moecca (pictured below) on the recent cruising in Sabah, in Malaysian Borneo, as well as advice on the best places to see and activities for guests when visiting Singapore.
