Lighting studio Flos has recently unveiled one of its most avant-garde projects: Soft Architecture. It is their latest collection and uses an innovative composite material to seamlessly combine lighting fixtures with their surroundings.

Designed by an eclectic group of luminaries such as Ron Gilad, Phillipe Starck, Sebastian Wrong, Marcel Wanders, Antonio Citterio, Fabio Calvi and Paolo Brambilla, the new collection represents an evolution of the traditional lamp. Hidden away behind false ceilings or integrated into vertical walls, the results are surreal and entirely unique, with the boundary between lighting and architecture becoming blurred.

Flos create this unexpected effect by using a lightweight and high strength composite material called Under-Cover technology. Incredibly durable, it also fulfills the latest international safety and eco-compatibility regulations as it is made with a non-inflammable material and has "Cradle to Cradle" certification, an official design recognition that pushes companies to view sustainability as an integral and valued part of the design process, not a design sacrifice, offering products that can be eternally recycled. The lights also use energy-saving light sources such as phosphor LED, cold cathode technology, low energy consumption fluorescent bulbs and low voltage halogen bulbs.

Along with the launch of the collection, Flos have launched a dedicated website, to act as both a source of inspiration and a tool for learning about the technical and architectural potential of Soft Architecture. It provides a continuously updated resource and is another step toward sustainability in replacing Flos’ traditional paper catalogues.

Of the collection, Wall Piercing designed by Ron Gilad is one of the most striking fixtures. The rings radiate light inwards, creating a textured effect by combining the three dimensional fixture with two dimensional shadow and light cast on the wall. With Wall Piercing it is possible to use just one to achieve a subtle glow or to use many, covering a wall for an undeniably remarkable and powerful lighting feature.
