The Annual Report 2017: Marinas & Migration

Our final Annual Report of 2017 offers extraordinary insight into the cruising patterns of superyachts in the Med…

It’s no secret that while some superyachts and superyacht owners have become more adventurous in their choices of destination, one region remains an evergreen cruising ground. From the earliest days of superyachting, yachts, owners and charter guests have flocked to the Mediterranean for the summer season. Further, in our Spring report we concluded not only that 75 per cent of the active superyacht fleet could be found in the Med in the summer months, but more than 50 per cent remained Med-bound even in it’s off-season.

Following this revelation, the Superyacht Intelligence team set out to uncover the truth behind superyacht cruising patterns in the Mediterranean, and through comprehensive surveying and interviewing of captains and first officers the team began to build an invaluable picture of the reality. It is not hard to see the value in this data, both for assessing the true state of the infrastructure across the Med hotspots, but also in offering insight to those who either operate superyacht-capable marinas or who supply superyachts in those marinas.

What do captains, crews, owners and guests look for in a modern marina during a cruise? Where are the yachts going on a seasonal basis? What are their favourite marinas and avoid-at-all-cost destinations? And where are the most expensive marinas in the Mediterranean?

The data we have compiled builds an intriguing picture of Mediterranean superyacht activity. We discovered, for example, that in 2017 the superyachts we canvassed in the 60m to 70m size bracket averaged 5,075 nautical miles of Med cruising. We uncover where they went, how long they spent in different locations, and even the average LOA of yacht visiting different areas. We are also able to reveal when the yachts typically started their first cruise, and when they finished their last, giving critical insight into the true nature of the Mediterranean superyacht season.

The Superyacht Annual Report 2017: Marinas & Migration goes further, though. By collating the respondents’ data on logged miles and cross-referencing it against the size and type of yacht we have been able to draw estimates on fuel use, and consequently a provisional guide to the size and value of the bunkering market.

Written by the expert journalists at The Superyacht Group, and containing invaluable tabular and graphical information, the Marinas & Migration report offers key insights into the perceptions, logjams and the things that are and aren’t working in the Mediterranean. It is essential reading for anyone who cruises or operates a yacht in the Med, who has a yacht coming into their marina, or who operates on the services and supply side – and the insights provide a unique window on what’s actually happening in this most crucial of centres for superyacht activity.
