Yogi sinking: Industry update

SuperyachtNews.com has spoken to a number of the parties involved in the construction and operation of 60m superyacht, 'Yogi'. The vessel sank off the coast of Skyros, Greece on Friday 17 February.…

Following the sinking of 60m Proteksan Turquoise vessel, Yogi, which occurred in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Skyros on Friday, the Turkish yard’s media representative, John Wickham has issued an update on the current situation:

“Proteksan Turquoise, the Turkish shipyard that constructed the 60m yacht, Yogi, that sank off Skyros, Greece on 17 February, wishes to explain that none of their representatives, nor their lawyers, has been able to interview the Captain and crew or obtain their written statements to date and the indications are that it will be a further ten days or so before they will meet with them. The only contact that has been made was when the Captain made a phone call to the shipyard after he had been rescued and was safely ashore on Skyros.

“It is for this reason that Proteksan Turquoise has not been in a position to release any further statements beyond the one sent out on Friday, February 17, as it feels that it is important to have all the facts relating to the incident before commenting further.”

This follows comments made the previous day by Proteksan Principal, Hayati Kamhi, who spoke to The Superyacht Group’s Consultant Editor, Tork Buckley about the incident:

”In the absence of firm information we can't really say anything at this stage. We will definitely give out more information when we receive it. But, we want to wait for the official reports and investigation after which we can make our assessment. Before that it would be very wrong to make any comment or pass any judgment.”

SuperyachtNews.com has also spoken to Jean Gould, vice president of external affairs at the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Yogi's classification society. When asked whether ABS had received any further information Gould said, “I can confirm designed and built to ABS rules and held an active ABS certificate of class at the time of the incident.” She confirmed that ABS had received no details of the circumstances surrounding the sinking itself, but added, “All that we’ve been able to attain to date is that she was built to class and to our rules.”

A representative of the superyacht’s flag state, the Registre Internationale Français, told SuperyachtNews.com, “we don’t have any information on the reasons why she sank. We are waiting for an inquiry, which takes place for all vessels that are French-flagged.” She said that, at this stage, a time and place for the investigation had not been confirmed but updates would follow as they were announced.
