STP launches multi-million euro expansion
Construction has commenced at Mallorca based shipyard on a project that aims to bring in the largest vessels in the fleet for refits and maintenance…
Servicios Técnicos Portuarios (STP) has embarked on an €8 million expansion and modernisation project to enhance its Mallorca-based shipyard facilities amid growing demand in the region. The project ultimately aims to increase productivity, improve operational efficiency and cater to larger vessels as part of a comprehensive upgrade to the STP esplanade.
“Over the years, we’ve received numerous requests for moorings for 100m-plus yachts that we haven’t been able to meet,” says Joan Rosselló, STP’s general manager. “With few options for large berths in the Port of Palma, we anticipate strong demand for the new moorings dedicated to repair services. [Now,] the spaces will be better organised so that all shipyard activities can be carried out more smoothly and efficiently,”
This expansion is expected to positively impact Mallorca’s local economy by attracting more substantial refit projects to the region. With enhanced capacity to accommodate larger vessels, STP anticipates the expansion will add between €50 million to €60 million in annual turnover for the local economy.
In terms of the technical aspects of the expansion, the project will see the total area of the shipyard increase from 130,000msq to 162,000msq, encompassing 102,000msq of land and 60,000msq of water. This expansion leverages previously used spaces on the edges of STP’s current footprint, enabling further development within the shipyard’s existing concession area.
The water-based expansion will bring five new berths, capable of accommodating yachts up to 110 metres in length, supplementing the current three berths dedicated to superyachts. The on-land however, STP will add dedicated zones for specific activities, including a new, covered area for mast removal, repair and painting.
STP is also adding photovoltaic panels on the new covered mast area and the parking area canopies. According to the shipyard, the solar power generated is expected to power the equivalent of 115 apartments and cut CO₂ emissions by 124 tonnes annually.
Construction has already commenced, however, STP has yet to confirm an expected completion date.
