Christian Fischbacher tell SuperyachtDesign about the creative evolution and design process behind its latest textile, Amos...…

Inspiration can come from anywhere for a new design, and this is especially true with textile design. For one of its latest designs, Christian Fischbacher has married the ancient Japanese dyeing technique of itajime shibori with designs created on the computer to create an experimental take on a classic pattern. Christian Fishbacher tell SuperyachtDesign about the creative evolution and design process behind Amos.

In our design studio in St Gallen Switzerland, the designers can tell countless stories about the origins of each of our fabrics. What was their inspiration was the pattern implemented technically, or was it hand drawn or a combination of both what were the considerations in colouration what difficulties have been overcome? Behind every fabric there is a tale to be told and Amos is a wonderful example.

Our designer Eva was inspired by the Japanese dyeing method of itajime shibori. In this technique, the fabric is folded several times, using small wooden templates that are held together with staples. After that, the package of folded material is placed in a bath of dye. Following a desired exposure time, it is taken out and the stencils are removed revealing the pattern. The longer the material is in the dye bath, the more intense the colour and the pattern is. Incidentally, the folding technique and the pressure of the clamps also influences the pattern.

Once the pattern was created, Eva created other aspects of the design using a computer to make it possible to produce this fabric industrially. This was done by using a transfer print technique onto a flame-retardant Trevira fabric, resulting in a flamboyant, unique fabric with an experimental, artisanal character, but produced industrially so it can be used in both public and private spaces.
