Art-Inox has delivered its new SMART hatch, a fast and simple solution to the necessity of watertight hatches during the superyacht construction process.

The first step of the process involves Art-Inox provididing the shipyard with a template and subframe (either vertical or horizontal), which will be either stainless steel or aluminium. The subframe can be provided to the yard well in advance of the finished hatch, which means it can be welded onboard during construction of the rough carpentry. It can be welded on flush with the bulkhead, or protruding up to a maximum of 24mm.

Subframe welded in flush and protruding position

The second stage involves providing the yard with a painted hatch, a hollow-core structure of stainless steel, complete with chassis, that can be placed in the counterframe, and holds the ability to be adjusted in three directions. It can be mounted on a construction that has already been plastered, and is able to be mounted flush with the counterframe, or protruding up to a maximum of 20mm. The adjustable depth means the thickness of the plaster applied is not a problem, and allows the plane of the hatch to be aligned with the surrounding surfaces.

Hatch mounted either flush or protruding

The vertical hatch is equipped with a stainless steel pantograph hinge, which allows a reduction of space, which means it can fully open. The lock is also stainless steel, with a retractable handle, and the closure can be equipped with a lock key. The vertical hatch can be made opening to the right or the left, with or without a ventilation grille and tight box. Large hatches can also be made with double hinges and double closure.

The horizontal hatch is similar in design to the vertical, but differs in its use of hinges. The hinges for the horizontal hatch are hidden, and use a traditional swing opening. Opening and closure work in the same was at the vertical, but it has one flat rod that closes by rotation of the hatch handle. The hatch has an opening of approximately 80°, and is equipped with gas pistons aid its opening, and keep it open. Once again, it may be made with a lock key and tight box, and large horizontal hatches are available.

The horizontal hatch

Both the vertical and horizontal hatches are inserted with adjustable plastic pads between the aluminium and stainless steel. A long-life EPDM gasket ensures a tight seal, while a black rubber gasket is used to close the light between the counterframe and frame.
