Harken releases new valve controller

Harken, manufacturer and marketer of sailboat hardware and accessories, has launched the Harken Smart Valve.

The patented Harken Smart Valve detects the drum speed of a hydraulic winch from a signal sent by a speed sensor inside the winch. It then automatically adjusts the hydraulic pressure for optimal line speed and pull force in each gear.

Features for the gears are as follows:

-  First gear: the valve opens electronically allowing full pressure for maximum line speed.
-  Second gear: the motor turns in the opposite direction. The valve is set to match winch size for optimal performance.
-  Third gear: the valve automatically reduces pressure, allowing maximum pull force with a safe amount of torque on the drive shaft.

As an ‘all-in-one’ package its advantages are that it saves the expense of additional valve banks and programming a separate power line carrier.


Harken Smart Valve

The valve controller is IP-67 rated for protection against dust and water immersion in a marine environment.

The smart valve is specifically programmed for each winch size. Available for 1111, 1130, and 1135 Harken hydraulic winches, it mounts directly to the winch motor, or mounts remotely in line between the valve and the winch motor.

The smart valve requires 24-volt DC when the winch is operational; if power is lost it will default to the lowest pressure for safety.
