For the third issue of The Superyacht Owner, we present six inspiring stories from owners. Their experiences of building and owning superyachts, frankly and honestly told, contribute hugely to our mission of truth telling, as well as inviting our readers – particularly those new to ownership – to feel comfortable entering the unique world of superyachts.

First of these owners is Russian owner Mikhail Khimich (pictured on the cover with his daughter). Once a committed motoryacht owner, Khimich decided to switch to sailing yachts on seeing the beautiful Vitters-built yacht Thalia in Cannes in 2007. He talks about Thalia, family and his company Waiwera Water, the southern hemisphere bottled water brand he bought in 2009 and which he is re-igniting for global renown.

Our second owner story comes from life-long water and yacht lover, Loretta Rogers. The Superyacht Owner caught up with Canadian Rogers while she was eagerly awaiting the delivery of her new yacht, 47m Loretta Anne. The Alloy-built yacht is the fifth namesake for Rogers who shared her passion for ownership with her late husband Ted Rogers.

Technology is a major draw to ownership for some. Such it was for Bill Joy, who built Ethereal in a sense as a superyacht technology lab. Now, four years after her launch, he speaks to features editor Don Hoyt Gorman about designing the perfect yacht, solar awnings, advances in LEDs and the prospects for a fuel cell future.

For the owners of Northern Sun, an ex-fisheries vessel used in Japan, her refit and conversion to luxury explorer yacht was the driving force and passion. The five-year project enabled the owners to enjoy the process as well as the end results of having a luxury yacht that can go to the furthest points in the globe.

An owner for whom superyachts are an inspiration in business as well as in life is residential entrepreneur Charles ‘Buddy’ Darby III. He explains how a project to develop a 2,500 acre Christophe Harbour resort in St Kitts was shaped by his entry into superyacht ownership, having adapted the resort’s plans after buying 47m Andromeda La Dea with a friend.

Presenting the nuts and bolts of ownership are features on law, legacy and chartering. We analyse how owners can make the transition from private to charter yachts and present the arguably little known potential offered by harnessing the power of major sporting events to boost charter interest. Superyacht law experts explain how to find the right security when considering a new build project.

On the cusp of show season, we deliver a preview of the biggest show of them all, the Monaco Yacht Show. With 500 exhibitors present at the quayside last year – and the same figure expected this year – there is an amazing array of experience, products and advice on hand for any owner or potential owner. And to mark its debut at the show, The Superyacht Owner will host an owners’ lounge which will give owners and partners an oasis to retreat to and enjoy a glass of champagne.

In every issue we pick a destination, looking at the wonderful variety of places across the globe accessible to yachts. The harsh, isolated and inhospitable Northwest Passage was the choice for 36m Royal Huisman yacht, Arcadia’s owner, who is the most recent yacht to have conquered this corner of the world.
