Japan Radio Co. adds black box technology to solid state radar
Japan Radio Co has gained type approval for the JMA-5372-SA black box radar. The new radar, which will be available by the end of 2011 is based on the company's existing solid-state radar technology.…
The new product conforms to the International Telecommunications Union guidelines for cleaning up the 3GHz frequency; it has a transmit power of 250W compared to the traditional magnetron-based 30kW equivalent. Advanced plus compression with the 250W solid-state transceiver is inteded to improve short range performancewhilst simultaneously improving long range target detection while using only 1/100 of the power of a conventional radar. However, like conventional radars the JMA-5372-SA has separate short, medium and long pulses for the different ranges.
Other benefits of solid-state technology include clearer depiction of moving targets, less maintenance and instant operation from start up as no pre-heating or tuning is necessary. This increased functionality is due to the fact that the traditional magnetron has been replaced with a Dopplar filter. The new technology has been tested to stand extreme temperatures and humidity as well as vibration.
The JMA-5372-SA is a full-featured IMO compliant radar, it has been type approved with JRC’s display but the authorities will allow it to be installed with other type-approved displays.
