Traditionally associated with the more technical and practical aspects of design and architecture, synthetic composite materials are now breaking into the world of high-end interior design too, with a host of products out there reflecting a more contemporary interpretation of luxury. The latest company to incorporate this type of material into their work is Kedo, an Italian design studio that creates beautiful, modern furniture out of carbon fibre.

“I have been working for years with carbon making the most of the advantages of its technical and mechanical characteristics, but at the same time, I have always thought that it had a great aesthetic impact: it reflects, giving black a special light, as if it had a soul,” says designer Zancai Massimo, CEO at Kedo. “ So came into being the motivation behind this activity”.

The knowledge of the raw materials and shapes, the workmanship and the skill comes from Massimo’s long experience in the composite material sector working as a research and development consultant for companies in the cars and motorcycle sector, operating exclusively for the racing departments of brands such as Ferrari, Minardi, Aprilia and others.

Kedo makes its furniture out of a type of carbon mix that includes extra light crystals, steel structures and solid precious materials, such as solid-ash, wenge and doussiè. The collection includes the X-1 carbon fibre lounge chair, inspired by an aircraft structure. The surface of the carbon fibre has been deliberately left exposed, giving the chair a reflective, eye-catching exterior. The core of the chair is made from honeycomb Nomex material, which is a flame-retardant, insulating polymer that combines with carbon fibre to create an extremely stiff, sleek new material. The padded portion of the chair is made from high quality leather and is available in a variety of colours. Kedo’s carbon fibre collection also includes several coffee table designs, carbon fibre ‘statues’ and a speaker.

Kedo emphasise that the pieces are made to last. They are light, sturdy and minimalist, making the most of one of the design world’s super materials.
