Monaco Yacht Show: Design preview

What are we looking forward to at the show from a design perspective?

There is no doubt about it, the design community is truly spoilt for choice when it comes to the yachts in attendance at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show (MYS). It is therefore quite difficult to single out a select few highlights to look out for during one of the most important industry gatherings of the year. Nevertheless, this year is certainly one for disruptive and impressive design.

We have some exciting debuts at the show this year, including the highly anticipated 90m M/Y Dar, delivered earlier in 2018. This new Oceanco yacht – designed by Luiz de Basto – will no doubt steal the limelight at the show with her striking exterior profile featuring vast glass panels, which truly set her apart. M/Y Illusion plus, built by Pride Mega Yachts, is another new delivery that is bound to be the talk of the show. Heesen Yachts will also be exhibiting their fantastic new delivery, 51m Irisha – undoubtedly another star of the show with her interesting, innovative layout and colour scheme.

A number of tender manufacturers are set to reveal new projects too. British manufacturer Pascoe International will be unveiling two new models and exhibiting two of its open limousine tenders that were recently delivered to Abeking & Rasmussen’s M/Y Elandess, which will also be at the show.

This year there will be some fantastic new concepts on display, including Bannenberg and Rowell’s 118m collaborative project with Kusch Yachts, M/Y Blazon, which will be on display at Kusch Yachts’ stand for the duration of the show. Meanwhile, Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design’s new 115m Art of the Sea will be on display on Parvis Piscine QP48. This has been designed with huge overhangs bow and stern, and a panoramic stern saloon with a glass transom that affords a spectacular view aft and over the yacht's wake.

This year there will be some fantastic new concepts on display, including Bannenberg and Rowell’s 118m collaborative project with Kusch Yachts, M/Y 'Blazon', which will be on display at Kusch Yachts’ stand for the duration of the show.

I’m looking forward to spotting some up-and-coming trends at the show, mainly the more toned-back interior style that many designers seem to be favouring. For many designers, it’s not about creating the most lavish interior that is humanly possible on board a superyacht, it’s about creating the best environment for the owner. For some, this might well be a super-stylised pristine environment, but for others they want a vessel that is designed to make those on board feel relaxed. In my opinion, this seems to be a trend that is associated with the younger generation of superyacht owners.

But it’s not just about the superyacht designers. The show will accommodate a range of beautiful fabrics, furniture and furnishings. Perennials and Sutherland will showcase their new stunning William Morris performance fabric, which is every crew member’s dream as it is so easy to clean, as is Heirlooms, who will be showcasing some of their bespoke yacht pieces. Summit Furniture will also be bringing a new furniture collection to the show in Parvis Piscine.

From the design perspective, there really is so much to look forward to at the show, be it the people, the yachts or all the other elements that make up the masterpieces that we have in our magnificent industry.
