Navionics launches community-sourced means of updating charts

Navionics has launched a community-driven initiative that allows Navionics Platinum and Navionics+ users to upload bathymetric sonar data to its site to enhance the accuracy of its bottom-detail charts.…

Navionics has launched SonarCharts, a community-driven initiative to update Navionics navigational charts database. SonarCharts allows Navionics Platinum and Navionics+ users to upload their sonar readings direct from their device to the Navionics site, where it is processed to produce more accurate bathymetric charts. The charts can be made available on the Navionics site in as little as 24 hours after the posting.

The SonarCharts layer is downloaded with Freshest Data, which also includes updated Nautical Charts and Community Edits, available free for a year with most chart purchases. SonarCharts is viewable on Humminbird, Raymarine, Lowrance and Simrad Yachting chartplotters.

“Customers consistently ask us ‘how can I get more detail for where I go’ because they’re most interested in the waters where they spend their time boating and fishing,” said Don Black, global vice president of sales and marketing, Navionics. “SonarCharts™ allows them to benefit from regular map updates, and takes it one step further by facilitating the charting of areas that are most important to them. We are thrilled with the enthusiastic participation we’ve seen from the Navionics community.”

Navionics+ is the new chart standard for Navionics users, providing greater content and access to more marine areas and lakes than previous incarnations, and ensuring that content remains up to date. With Navionics+, customers can select and download any amount of content from one of seven extensive global regions. The US and Canada region, for example, allows helmsmen to choose both freshwater and saltwater charts throughout the entire region. In addition, Navionics+ gives captains the ability to enhance their charts with the sonar logs they collect; one year of Freshest Data updates that includes Nautical Charts, SonarChartsTM and Community Edits; and the ability to sync with Navionics mobile and web apps.

“Navionics+ and Navionics Updates change the way boaters access electronic charts, and give owners the satisfaction and comfort of knowing their charts reflect the most current data available,” said Don Black, global vice president of sales and marketing at Navionics. “Static charts quickly become outdated. Our new products eliminate old chart data and, with our innovative SonarCharts functionality, allow you to contribute to the knowledge base – continuously increasing chart accuracy and detail for everyone.”
