Believing that the current superyacht fleet falls short of fulfilling worldwide exploration and adventure, Captain Matthias Bosse and his team have entered into a new venture, Hawk Yachts, to fill this gap in the market. Alongside designers Diana Scott and Frank Neubelt and naval architects Andri Largiardèr and Robert McFarlane, Captain Bosse presents the 103m Sea Hawk, and speaks to TheSuperyachtOwner.com about the vision behind the project.

With a background as an Ice Master, Master Mariner and explorer, Captain Bosse has had a career in both the private yacht sector and expedition cruising. “I was privileged enough to do some remarkable voyages in my years in the expedition cruise industry and there are a number of moments I will never forget; life changing moments if you will,” he explains, giving particular reference to his visit to Scott’s Hut at Cape Evans in Antarctica and spending Christmas in the historic whaler’s chapel in South Georgia with a couple of walruses and penguins as his only company.

These experiences led Captain Bosse to ask the question; ‘What is the ultimate reason for owning a superyacht?’ “In my opinion the ultimate reason is the capability to explore the world in total luxury and safety,” he explains. “The current interest in expedition cruising is clear but there are few, if any, luxury superyachts that properly fulfil this capability. There are the converted trawlers and tugs of course, but they lack the comfort and port status of a superyacht and there are the new builds with trawler looks that lack the sea-worthiness for true exploration.”

The vision behind Hawk Yachts is to create capable superyachts that don't look out of place in the world's most prestigious ports.

In line with Captain Bosse’s vision is to provide the market with yachts that are both beautiful and sea-worthy, the Hawk Yachts team have developed Sea Hawk, a superyacht that fits in at the most prestigious ports of the world and it yet is more than capable in the harshest conditions. “Our design was conceived with worldwide exploration in mind, thus Sea Hawk has Polar Ice Class 6, enabling her to break through 80cm of new ice,” he describes. “We have expedition style sea chests, heated door seals oversized propellers and machinery to withstand ice interaction.

“The other extreme is the Amazon, which is navigable 2000nm upstream. Here we have features like high performance air-con systems, easily accessible heat exchangers designed to cope with silt blockages. We have an osmosis plant for brackish waters to produce fresh water and specially designed high temperature engine coolers and easily changeable and accessible insect and pollen filters.”

Pointing out that there has been a noticeable upturn in interest in the explorer market, and that charter companies are being increasingly asked for alternative voyaging, Captain Bosse believes another reason that the market is ripe for Hawk Yachts is that a younger generation entering the superyacht industry. “This market is not as interested in just lounging and relaxing in the sunshine," he adds. "They want more from their yachts, they want different geographical experiences."

Hawk Yachts are currently working on two further designs based on the same philosophy of exploration sea-worthiness and Monaco looks. The range will be extended to include 80m and 50m yachts. “We are confident that these yachts will offer the same freedom to explore that their owners deserve,” concludes Captain Bosse.

Captain Matthias Bosse will be discussing Sea Hawk in the Global Superyacht Forum's 'Superyachts of Tomorrow' focus group. View the full programme here.
