Chartering the Pacific

The Pacific charter season has just begun and SuperyachtNews.com spoke with charter brokers to see what yachts are on offer for charter in the region, and why cruising the Pacific is now easier than ever before...…

With the Mediterranean and Caribbean charter seasons warming up, the Pacific charter season has also just begun. The season runs from April to September, with April to June the best months to visit. This time of year sees multiple superyachts, many of whom have just completed refit work in Australia and New Zealand, descend upon the beautiful islands of the Pacific. Although remote, the Pacific is attracting more yachts than ever: improved transport links from the yacht transporters and better levels of provisioning mean that visiting the area is increasingly easy.

“The magic of the South Pacific is it’s areas of complete remoteness, friendly peoples and an un-commercialised relaxed innocence about it,” said Captain Phil Jouning of 37 South, who spoke to SuperyachtNews.com “This makes it a region that is very attractive to owners and charterers alike. The economic benefits of visiting superyachts have not been overlooked by the small island nations either, and in most cases commercial chartering can be carried out with the minimal amount of compliance and cost.”

"There is definitely a trend among some yacht owners and charter clients for exploration in a secluded area while in a safe environment and the South Pacific is among one of these few places," said Christelle Holler of Tahiti Private Expeditions. "Located far from the usual Med and Caribbean hubs, which have been sought after for decades, a lot of the newly built yachts can travel further which offers new adventures. Over the past six years Tahiti has been proactive in promoting our destination and "the Tahitian experience" and this is paying off."

The close proximity of the Pacific islands to Australia and New Zealand means that yachts have a base to provision from (see issue 63 of The Crew Report for a detailed article ‘Provisioning the Pacific’) This shore support means that, “High standards of provisioning can be maintained, which means that the charter guest is not compromising anything to explore and discover some of the world remote regions and the vessels are able to maintain their normal high standard of cuisine and service,” said Jouning. "Each season for the past five years has seen a steady growth in the charter market and 2013 is no exception with more vessels coming through who have planned their marketing ahead of time. Although there are still the short notice bookings the majority of bookings are still made several months ahead as charterers plan their lives."
