The world of superyacht crew is constantly evolving and the next issue of The Crew Report
is out to bring crew in touch with the current happenings of our
changing industry. At recent boat shows and crew events, the editorial
team has been talking to senior crew about the state of the industry and
Issue 64 responds to the questions and topics that have been brought
up. As a result, we bring you a magazine packed with intelligent and
topical features for superyacht crew.
Captain Massimo Marras and his crew were on board Vicem’s 46m new build Vulcan 46 for her maiden voyage from Turkey to Antibes Yacht Show where she was exhibited for sale. The Crew Report was welcomed on board and the issue includes an interview with Captain Marras, discussing the pressures of job security felt today by those captains and crew working on board a yacht for sale, as well as the effect that the crew job market is having on the quality of today’s crew.
Few captains are happy to discuss why our industry shies away from reporting accidents – a vital factor for the improvement of safety on board – but we found some who were willing to put pen to paper. Issue 64 returns with the regular Captains’ Comments feature and we ask four captains their views on why we as an industry fear exposure and how we can better our accident reporting culture.
Having an owner tell you he wants to undertake a trip to a relatively unchartered destination is music to the ears of many captains, but the planning process is complex and is largely responsible for the trip’s success. In this issue, Ben Lyons of EYOS Expeditions explains the intricacies of planning extensive expeditions and three superyacht captains share their personal experiences of planning out-of-the-way voyages.
The word ‘union’ is becoming an evermore-familiar utterance in the industry as more discussions take place about whether a protector of workers’ rights is necessary for superyacht crew. We present the opinions of two superyacht captains – one in favour of unions, another who is against the notion – about whether the superyacht industry would benefit from a united body for crew.
In the second ‘Future Forecast’ column, The Crew Report hears from Franc Jansen, director at Hill Robinson Yacht Management Consultants, about the future role of management companies, including how the MLC is altering the role of the management company and the need for captains to understand the function of the management company to assist the role of the captain, not threaten it.
