Matthew Hockham, an industrial design graduate from Coventry University has created a new car design to compliment the Wally series, more specifically Wallypower 118.

This is not the first vehicle to have been expressly designed for a superyacht, with Strand Craft 122 by Gray Design and Strand Craft as a good example. Hockham has created a sports car that takes into account the Wally brand, with the aim of being its land-based counterpart. “The idea for the concept came about as a result of my fascination for Wally yachts and their radical looks”, explains Hockham. “As an automotive designer I saw a number of cues in these yachts, which I felt would lend themselves to an automotive form. I thought it would be an interesting challenge to try and apply these features to a car design.”

Hockham goes on to explain how he was highly influenced during the development of the design by the shape of the 118. The objective of the concept was to create a vehicle with supreme functionality that took performance into account, but was not the main focus, and would incorporate as many visual references to the yacht as possible. “It was important for me that the Wally roots of the car are very recognisable in the facetted surfacing and sharp angles”, explains Hockham. A particular feature of the design is the space created between the rear passenger seats for water-skis.

Taking into consideration the materials used on the Wallypower 118, Hockham decided to make use of carbon fibre in the frame of the car and in the interior design. Teak has also been chosen for the floor, including the boot, which was an important aspect in underlining the yacht influence.
