World's largest sailing sloop arrives at Pendennis Plus for refit

The 75.2m sailing yacht 'M5', known previously as 'Mirabella V', has arrived at Pendennis Plus, Falmouth, for a major one-year refit. The project is supporting the UK superyacht industry by collaborating with other UK businesses...…

Just over six months after the world’s largest sailing catamaran (the 44m Hemisphere) set sail on her maiden voyage from Pendennis, and just days after the 62.2m motoryacht Virginian left Falmouth’s Pendennis Plus after her refit, the world’s largest sailing sloop, known to most as Mirabella V but renamed by her new owner as M5, has arrived at Pendennis Plus to undergo a substantial refit.

At 75.2m, M5 is the world’s largest sailing sloop, and her refit, which will see the necessary removal of her 90m mast before she docks down in May, is expected to take a full 12 months.

“We are very proud to have been selected to complete the refit of such an iconic sailing yacht,” said Managing Director of Pendennis Plus, Stephen Hills. “It is through projects such as this that the superyacht industry in the UK, including our yard in Falmouth, continues to enhance its world-class reputation for exceptional build quality, design, finish and engineering.”

M5 was built in 2004 by British shipyard VT Shipbuilding, and her owner has chosen to continue supporting the UK superyacht industry by staging her refit in the UK. Several UK and Ireland-based companies will collaborate for the refit. Having just completed Vava II, Redman Whiteley Dixon (RWD) has been commissioned for M5’s interior design, which will see the main and lower decks undergo a complete restyle, and M5’s original designer, naval architect Ron Holland, will steer the structural improvements.

“The team assembled for the works are testament to the quality of the workforce and facilities available in the UK,” said the superyacht’s captain, Rocka Romke.

M5’s refit will see the stern redesigned and extended by 3m, as well as further exterior restyling work, including the installation of a side-boarding platform. The structural fabrication of the composite stern will be undertaken by another UK-based company, Green Marine, who will be supported by structural engineers High Modulus Europe Ltd.

The engineering work will see the replacement of M5’s main engines, generators, switchboards and sewage treatment plant replaced, as well as the upgrade of the air conditioning system, electrics and entertainment system, all of which will be complemented by a 10-year DNB survey.

A full hull repaint with mast and rig overhaul completes the list of major structural tasks.

Captain Romke concluded: “Both Pendennis plus and RWD have established reputations as being among the best in their fields, with experience in both the large yacht and sailing yacht sectors. I believe the collaboration between these parties will elevate M5 to be one of the most impressive and original sailing yachts in the world, in both structure and style.”

The refit is scheduled for completion in exactly 12 months.
