Out Now: The Superyacht Operations Report

Issue 217: The Superyacht Operations Report is now available to read and download online…

The Superyacht Operations Report puts the focus back on the cornerstone of the industry, the crew. Few feel the ripples in the world of superyachting quite like those at the coal face of its operations, and this edition gives a timely platform to hear their voices.

Against a backdrop of a turbulent market, a climate in flux and shifting perceptions of the superyacht industry, yachts are operating against an increasingly complex societal backdrop. In this edition, we examine some fascinating opportunities that the industry presents and is presented with, as well as take an earnest look at its shortcomings.

The Nekton Mission is an international alliance of non-profits profit and global partners on a quest to explore, comprehend and safeguard marine life, with a focus on the deep ocean. Jack Hogan speaks with CEO Oliver Steeds, as it embarks on Ocean Census, a new global marine scientific initiative that is setting out to redefine our understanding of the ocean ecosystem.

In an industry where the owner’s opinion of how their crew should look carries a lot of weight, tales of unfair and discriminatory treatment as a direct consequence of these preferences abound. Georgia Tindale opens up a candid conversation with current crew about their experiences of size-based discrimination within the industry.

Jack Hogan caught up with the stunning 81-metre schooner, Sea Eagle, from Royal Huisman, as it was completing a yard period at STP Palma ahead of a busy charter season. Three years after an enforced understated launch, the world's largest aluminium sailing yacht is ready to embark on a busy and challenging charter schedule to the farthest reaches of the Pacific.

This edition is also a timely opportunity to reexamine the outcomes and subsequent efforts to address a comprehensive and damming crew mental health survey published by Quay Crew. Ken Hickling reports from a multi-sector crew welfare working group set up to actively tackle the issues highlighted, and look at pathways forward.
