The Crew Report Issue 62 published

The latest issue of The Crew Report will be available to superyacht crew across the globe this week. Issue 62 looks at the forthcoming MLC with particular focus on crew contracts and port state control inspections. Five superyacht captains share their views on how their role has changed over the years, and Captain Len Beck of motoryacht 'Battered Bull' provides some words of wisdom about moving the industry forward.…

Issue 62 of The Crew Report continues our aim to deliver intelligent and compelling content to professional superyacht crew.

Issue 62 hears from Captain Len Beck of 52m motoryacht Battered Bull, the recent winner of the 2012 ISS Distinguished Crew Award. Captain Beck, in his article ‘Flying the flag’, provides readers with his words of wisdom about the nature of our industry and what crewmembers can do to move it forward in a deserving and professional light.

Now a regular and popular feature in the magazine, this issue’s ‘Captains’ comments’ poses the question of how the role of the superyacht captain has changed in recent years. The superyacht industry, though relatively young, has evolved hugely from its early days and so we have spoken to captains about exactly how their role has adapted to our ever-changing industry.

With the superyacht industry evolving at this rapid rate, it is essential that the training facilities for the crew, the people that enable this industry to move forward, keeps up with it. The Crew Report’s Managing Editor, Lulu Trask, paid a visit to Warsash Superyacht Academy to better understand the philosophy behind the academies that inform, educate and support the superyacht crew of tomorrow.

As the August implementation date of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 fast approaches, it is likely that crew will see a significant increase in Port State Control inspections. With this in mind, ex-Port State Control inspector Richard Eastham provides our readers with a guide on how to deal with an inspection and the inspector so that crew can get better prepared for this eventuality.

The approach of the MLC is also seeing the arrival of the Seafarer Employment Agreement on board, which intends to replace all existing employment contracts on board. In our feature ‘Sign on the dotted line’, we explore why standardised contracts are a necessary formality that should be adopted across the whole industry, acting in the interests of both crewmembers and their employers.

With superyachts venturing further afield, the South Pacific remains a largely remote location to most. The Produce Company, based in Mt Wellington in Auckland, New Zealand, has been exporting provisions to superyachts cruising the South Pacific for several years and during this time has had some valuable experiences. The Crew Report speaks to John Stokes, director and sales manager of The Produce Company, to learn more about the challenges of exporting fresh produce to the Pacific.

In an interesting discussion, Mike French, in his feature ‘Stars and stripes’, explores how the United States of America has firmly cemented itself within our industry as a nation of significance, but also becoming cemented are stereotypes of American crewmembers and crew-related issues, and as a result ‘Yachting America’ has unjustly established itself as a tarnished brand.

Issue 62 includes many more features covering current topics which include one couple’s concerns for the industry and why they have decided to depart from it; we explore whether the Far East’s crew sector can keep up with the industry’s expansion in the region; an introduction to our brand new products section; discussing the sensitive task of managing an owner’s budget; looking at how interior crew can improve their relationship with their owner; and we hear from more a reader about one article from Issue 61 regarding crew tipping culture.
