Clear skies and calm waters
Jonathan Beckett, CEO of Burgess, considers the tough times ahead and what lies beyond…
“The COVID-19 pandemic has already had a profound effect on the charter market,” starts Beckett. “In the wake of the Global Financial Crisis the market was down but there was still a lot of people out there looking for deals on charters. By comparison, the charter market today has fallen off a cliff edge and stopped. The problem is the uncertainty, we simply don’t know when people will be able to travel again or what areas they will be allowed to travel to. What the market absolutely needs is for the Mediterranean to be open in August. If that is the case, then I foresee a rush to book charter spots. But, if the Mediterranean remains closed, then it is a whole different ball game.”
