San Diego Harbor Police have arrested a man who snuck onboard Mark Zuckerberg’s support vessel at Broadway Pier on 19th October. The officers responded to a reported disturbance near the waterfront when they encountered an individual trespassing on board the tender of 67-metre Wingman and throwing objects into the water.
Detailed in a statement provided to SuperyachtNews by San Diego Harbor Police, the individual, later identified as 35-year-old Christopher Gerritt, was detained by officers.
“At approximately 2:30 p.m. the Port of San Diego Harbor Police received reports of an individual trespassing on a vessel and throwing items into San Diego Bay. Harbor Police officers arrived at the scene and made verbal contact with the suspect,” says the spokesperson.
“Gerritt was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance and for violations related to his status as a registered sex offender. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported to either the officers or the suspect during the incident. This investigation is ongoing. Further details will be released once the investigation is completed.”
Gerritt had boarded the tender docked alongside the Damen support vessel, which carries an array of toys and other tenders for Zuckerberg’s primary yacht, the 118-metre Feadship Launchpad. Police then arrested him at gunpoint before removing him from the vessel.
The report from the San Diego Harbor Police revealed that Gerritt had been in California for just over a month and was originally from Florida.
During the initial investigation, police discovered that Gerritt was also not complying with legal requirements related to his out-of-state status due to previous convictions. Gerritt also admitted to being under the influence of drugs and to using methamphetamine at the time of the incident.
Harbor Police subsequently arrested Gerritt on multiple charges, including drug use, trespassing and failure to follow registration requirements for his status as a sex offender transient. He was booked into San Diego County Jail and is expected to face charges.
Further investigations are underway, as it remains unclear how Gerritt actually managed to board the vessel, raising concerns about security measures both at the marina and on the yachts.
