The Superyacht Report: Refit Focus Out Now

This release is part of our Open-Source strategy – Issue 223 will be available for free for the rest of November. Get it hot off the press!…

Here at The Superyacht Group, we’re committed to bringing you the most valuable insights from across the industry, and the latest edition of The Superyacht Report: Refit Focus is a testament to that. As always, our commitment with The Superyacht Report remains to inform and advise the decision-makers of the market with trusted, high-value intelligence. Our expert team works to always provide the information that drives meaningful discussion across the industry.

Refit continues to adapt and push boundaries, so we’ve packed this issue with expert analysis and dissected the trends shaping the future of our industry. We ask: Are refit contracts being taken seriously enough? Clyde & Co’s Giovanna Cabbia argues they should rival new-build agreements in care and attention to detail. Kevin Laverty from Hill Robinson, on the other hand, lays out the essentials for choosing a top-tier refit project manager, while Marstrat Consultancy’s Hein Velema presents a new standard in owner representation.

In a market as dynamic as refit, where there is a constant sense of emergency, a rare camaraderie persists that is not found elsewhere. We consult with industry-leading CEOs who are taking the future of the sector into their capable hands to understand more about where these leaders envision the industry’s trajectory. We ask them about their current fears, what changes they would make to how projects are managed, and how they are preparing for the road ahead.

The latest edition also marks the launch of our new Industry Leader series, featured in each issue of The Superyacht Report. In this inaugural conversation, we sit down with Andrey Lomakin, CEO and Founder of West Nautical. Lomakin shares his remarkable journey from selling phones in Soviet Russia to selling yachts on the French Riviera. The entrepreneur also offers his insights into current trends in the brokerage market and reveals what it takes to build a thriving business in the yachting industry.

A refit is, in many ways, a rebirth, breathing new life into yachts through technically sound updates. But Martin H. Redmayne takes this further, presenting the potential for owners to embark on passionate restoration projects, bringing modern classic yachts back to their former glory.

The latest iteration of the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI) is set to launch at METSTRADE and The Superyacht Forum in Amsterdam. We catch up with Robert van Tol, executive director of the Water Revolution Foundation, to hear about what’s next on the horizon. We also sit down with Bram Jongepier, senior specialist at Studio De Voogt and the visionary behind YETI, to discuss how he hopes the industry will embrace and leverage this tool to drive meaningful progress.

The growth of the new-build sector has put relentless pressure on the rest of the industry to scale up talent and services, and nowhere is this more evident than in the refit sector. The increasing number of yachts requires more facilities equipped to handle maintenance and upgrades and this surge in demand has pushed shipyards to rise to the challenge.

As the fleet grows and expands, we’re seeing refit hubs emerge in places that weren’t on the map a few years ago. This is a sign of how this industry is evolving, and it’s fascinating to watch. So, In this issue,  we explore this evolution, spotlighting how refit facilities are emerging in less traditional locations and what this reveals about an industry adapting and expanding beyond its usual boundaries.

Looking at the challenges that lie ahead, the next generation of yachting talent is often cited as the most pressing, and it needs to be addressed. So, on a more reflective note, Lürssen’s Alberto Perrone asks the burning question of how we attract young talent to this industry when hands-on work is competing with shiny digital careers. Perhaps the answer lies in looking beyond the traditional talent pools of affluent academics or coastal towns and instead seeking our future in inner city areas, where exposure to the industry is virtually nil.

With our eyes firmly set on the future, we present a preview of the 2025 edition of The Balearic Superyacht Forum. Building on the success of the inaugural edition earlier this year, our aim is to continue exploring the opportunities and challenges that the Balearics present as a hub of industry. This next edition will focus on critical regional topics, such as the evolving regulatory landscape, the sustainability efforts impacting local waters and the growth potential within refit and charter.

You can read all of this and more in the latest edition of The Superyacht Report, which is essential reading during the week of METSTRADE and The Superyacht Forum and beyond.

Issue 223 will be available for free until the end of November. This release is part of our Open-Source strategy, designed to make our Reports accessible to everyone in an interactive digital format.
